It’s been a little over 90 days since I took over as managing partner at Boss Project. Since then, I’ve been deep in experimentation! I’ve changed our email schedule, rolled out regular workshops and tried a ton of new tech and tools. I even planned out the next 16 months of promotions, product releases, and exciting new projects we are pursuing. On today’s episode, I’m giving you all a look behind the scenes: what’s working, what’s been fun, what I wouldn’t bother with, and what’s been the most effective.

Two Updated Marketing Strategies that Have Worked from Day One

When I started Boss Project, I was deeply involved in marketing. As the business grew, I took on different roles and had different responsibilities. Eventually, marketing became a very small part of my job. There were a lot of things I missed! When I first stepped into this role, I intended to experiment with many things. But I also committed to focusing on what I knew worked initially to see if it was still reliable in today’s market. Spoiler alert: they were all effective; it just took some nuanced updates. Nurturing the email list I already have and pouring into the channel that has already built the most traction for the business; the podcast! 

Three Ways to Think About Content

What’s going to drive traffic, what’s creating a discovery opportunity, and what are your nurture platforms? Blogging and Instagram, historically, have been discovery tools. Recently, Instagram has not been providing that environment for organic growth. But some recent changes could mean that parts of the platform could be used for discovery, and others for nurture. At the moment, emails are serving a different purpose. It’s where I update my clients on the latest workshop, the newest drop on the co-op, and when the next coaching call is. My team is helping me with all these logistical elements.

Why Four Emails a Month Wasn’t Enough For Me

I’ve taken over 98% of our content writing email. I’ve started writing from my voice! We were sending out four emails a month, on a Sunday. We’ve changed that to less tactical and more emotionally driven content. I wanted to amp up the frequency. You might think that your audience might be upset when you start sending out more mails, but you should see our inbox! If anything, we’ve received more compliments. Our evergreen emails are three times a week, and if I’m in promotion mode, it gets as frequent as daily emails! The two additions that have been most worthy of our time are the two directing traffic to the content we’ve published elsewhere. It’s a really solid reminder and an invitation to those who haven’t encountered it before. 

The One Thing AI Can Do For Your Business

We record a video with every podcast. We just don’t typically do anything with the video! It’s honestly so much work to find the clips that are suitable for social media. People are likely to pay team members to comb through hours of footage to find them. I discovered in a short time that a whole plethora of AI tools can do this for you! You simply upload or link your video, and it will scrub the content and find the clips that you can use. I tried and tested three of these tools including ZenCastr — you can use the cheapest plans! Clips created square videos which would only be useful for Facebook. I also looked at Munch and Opus. One thing that surprised me about these AI options, is that none of them were instant! 

The Form of Content That Surprised Me Most

The other thing I tried in terms of video content is using a graphic as a reel. It’s really interesting to see how the culture of what works on Instagram is so different to what works on Instagram. We’ve tried a handful of memes, literally with no audio on them, and we’ve got over 4000 impressions on them, which is freaking awesome! I am leaning into discovering how to use existing content for my feed for even more discoverability. More than ever, there’s a set of unspoken rules on TikTok, which you have to follow to see results. Instagram is more of an anything-goes environment at the moment. 

Why a Predictable Schedule is Powerful For Me

I thrive on cyclical systems! It’s not that I need a prescriptive platform or organizational tool, I just want a predictable calendar. I need to know where I need to be, what I need to do, and how I need to show up. I have figured out a three-week promo cycle that works for me, which I follow up with a four to six week evergreen cycle. I still haven’t ironed out all the finer details, but currently I’m really enjoying having my meetings in the morning, and having all my creative work run for the rest of the day.
